This is a placenta print. My placenta from the birth of my identical twins was laid onto finely prepared, traditional gesso ground. Traditional gesso is made by heating rabbit skin glue with fine gypsum powder. It is painted in layers onto wood and sanded to create a beautiful plaster like surface. It is used traditionally in icon painting and for gilding but can also be used for silverpoint and egg tempera painting. The blood print was then heated until dry and gold leaf water gilded to highlight the shape of the placenta and it's two umbilical cords.
